Launch of the Kelpies at Helix Park
About the project
This summer, we were invited by UZ Arts to cover the John Muir Festival 2014. The event opened with a gorgeous night-time arts event on the theme of Scotland as ‘Home’ which also marked the international launch of the nation’s new cultural landmark, The Kelpies and we were delighted to be asked to photograph and film the spectacle.
Artist Andy Scott’s colossal 300-tonne, 30-metre high horses heads’ sculptures at Helix Park in Falkirk were brought to life with a breath-taking light, sound and flame performance by Groupe F, the internationally renowned pyrotechnic company which famously lit up the Eiffel Tower at the Millennium. With specially commissioned pieces created by Scottish, homegrown artists, the audience took a night-time promenade through the the park encountering illuminated installations and projections, all taking inspiration from Muir’s quote “going to the mountains is going home”, and creating an atmospheric link between the outdoors and feeling at home.
