Alan McAteer was invited on an extraordinary journey, collaborating with NVA’s Angus Farquar and getMade’s James Johnson to create an immersive photographic installation.  The project was to be known as Island Drift and was commissioned in partnership with Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. It aimed to encapsulate the raw beauty and essence of Scotland’s landscapes, particularly focusing on the Highland boundary fault line.

Over eight months in 2015, the creative team worked closely with park rangers to manipulate both moving and static light sources across land and water. The goal was to harness the natural elements and create a series of powerful images that would articulate this remarkable region’s rugged terrain and unique character.

Unlike our previous commissions from NVA, photographing their spectacular large-scale outdoor performances, Island Drift took a different approach with the primary intention of manipulating light and movement in the landscape to craft photographic fine art that would resonate with audiences on a visual level.

Our efforts culminated in a gallery-based exhibition at Street Level Photoworks from November 14th, 2015, to January 24th, 2016.  A series of printed works and lightbox images formed an exhibition that offered multiple perspectives on the region’s topography and reminded the audience of the awe-inspiring landscapes that Scotland has to offer, and which we are lucky enough to call home.
