Glasgow Christmas Lights 2020
About the project
Although Christmas was all but cancelled in 2020 and public celebrations and gatherings were off the cards, Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life were determined to put on a show to mark the occasion. Although non-essential retail and most hospitality were closed a ‘Love Glasgow this Christmas’ campaign was mounted to focus on what we could do, rather than what we couldn’t.
Glasgow residents were able to visit George Square where they could soak up the magic of Christmas while marvelling at the City Chambers bathed in colour washes, sparkling lights, and laser beams.
We were invited to use our skill and experience to provide a collection of images that showed the City Chambers’ dramatic beauty as it was illuminated in a way it had never been before. Alan has photographed countless UK arts and cultural events over the years and was especially pleased to be photographing this one on his doorstep. He was able to access the roof of the Merchant Building at the opposite side of the Square on the evening of the test sessions and captured some stunning views of the building and George Square. He added to the collection with further visits at different times of the evening to capture the full range of illuminations that took place within a one hour cycle and to show those who were able to gather enjoying the event.
