About the project

The Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014 was a resounding success.  The city gathered up its skirts and put on a show to rival all others.  Glasgow welcomed thousands of athletes, their families, Games officials and fans from throughout the Commonwealth to partake in a fortnight of sport, revelry and good times.  The sun shone brightly and the rain made the odd appearance but that didn’t stop the City being abuzz with the most incredible atmosphere of festival, celebration and friendliness.

McAteer Photograph was invited to document the Games time celebration: Festival 2014, which buddied the calendar of sporting events.  There was so much going on from shows, exhibitions and comedy to film, dance, music and family events.  Our list was huge and also a bit of a moveable feast so careful planning and attention to detail was necessary to ensure we didn’t miss a thing.  Our brief was to capture the mood of the Games and show Glasgow doing what it does best: putting on a party to welcome the world.

We photographed some highly entertaining sights at the Glasgow Green Live Zone, great comedy and music at the newly refurbished Kelvingrove Bandstand and hung out in the Merchant City soaking up the cosmopolitan vibes of the area while capturing some sights to remember.  The Dennistoun Library Knitting Club welcomed us with open arms, a couple of duelling Princes were spotted and the Queen’s Baton Relay captured for posterity.

All in, it was a full-on, full-time gig for us that resulted in a unique collection of memories and legacy that Glasgow Life can call upon at any time to show what a friendly, enthusiastic and creative city we have.
